Instructions - Day 3

Before you begin the work for today, check the spreadsheet tracker here to see how you are progressing in the project.  At this point you should have 1-1.5 pages of typed background research and at least 3-6 sources cited in your google document.  If you do not have these things finished there is a red box by your name to let you know what you still need to do.

Today we will be moving on to creating the rough draft of our reports.  Below you will find the template for the report.  A template helps you to structure your writing and organize your thinking.  Your task is to look through your background research section and fill in each section of the report template in writing that is all your own.

Creating your rough draft will likely take more that on class period, and may require additional research on your part.  By the end of the day you should have started your rough draft by creating a new document and sharing it with me (hkil2e2n@gmail.com) the same way you shared the Research document. Your Rough Draft should be 1.5-2 pages of text, if you include images it can be slightly longer.

Below is the **OFFICIAL** template for your google document (your document MUST be in this same format).
START A NEW DOCUMENT TITLED "Period 1-LastName-The Science of Fireworks ROUGH DRAFT"
**To start a new document you will need to navigate back to google drive, select create, select document.  This new document will be saved in the same place as your background research.

Rubric

A permanent link to the Final Project rubric can be found here.  Please check your work against the rubric regularly to be sure that your project is addressing the requirements.

Important Notes About Project Due Dates!

HSHS Administration announced today that final projects will be REPLACING FINAL EXAMS.  This means that there will be no final exam for this course and the project will take the place of the exam grade.  Due to this change I am pushing due dates for the project back to next week.  Please read the details below.

SENIORS ---
Your report will be due to me on Monday the 19th at 7:30am.  You will be asked to give a short presentation to the class on this day to summarize what you learned.

9th-11th GRADERS ---
Your reports will be due Wednesday of next week, but will have to be accompanied with a full presentation.  Details to follow.

Instructions - Day 2

First click here to view the spreadsheet which will keep you updated about what parts of the project you have completed.  If you do not see your name, or you do not have a red box next to your name then you need to complete the work from the post titled "Instructions - Day 1".

Today you will be working on collecting background research for your chosen topic.  Read the instructions below for how and where you should collect your research.
  • Create a section in your google document with a heading titled "Background Research".
    • This is where you will keep all of the resources you use while researching your topic.
    • Copy/paste the url (page address) for every website and webpage you use in your research
      • Include a DETAILED description of all important information you found at that website below the url. (make bulleted lists)
    • You will continue to add resources to this section throughout the entire project.
    • Keep detailed records of all your resources and the information you get from each because you will need these later when you create your final report in your works cited section**
      • Minimum requirement - 3 additional sources.  Total of 6 different, reputable resources
        • Cannot list Google as a source; Wikipedia is OK in most cases.
  • Your background research page should be 1.5 pages MINIMUM with 12 pt. font.
    • Background Research - things to include
      • What is it? Learn everything about it.
      • What is it made of? Does it have a food label?
      • What chemicals are in it? What
      • What are the chemical reactions involved or needed?
      • List all of the components of your ... (everything it is made of [ex. sucrose, lactose, polyvinyl-chloride, etc])
        • If you chose a ... that has multiple parts then you might need to make separate sections for each part (example: The Chemistry of Skateboards: make headings under "The Composition of Skateboards" for each of the 'parts' of the skateboard: Board; Trucks; Wheels; etc? Under each heading include the composition of each 'part').
      • Find a few pictures of your material that could be used on your final report.

What is the Point of This Project?

Most of people don't understand how much chemistry and physics affect our lives. Science is involved in everything from the organic processes that allow our bodies to function, to the complex chemistry required to make the rubber soles of our shoes, to the forces that dictate how we interact with the world.  We are surrounded by the benefits and atrocities of science, from the miracle of birth to weapons of mass destruction, there is no escaping its grasp.  So, by having you explore the science of something that you are interested in I hope that you will be able to see how important, complex, and wonderful it can be!

All you have to do is think of your favorite thing in the whole world (or something you are very interested in) and put it in for the ... There is (almost) nothing that is off limits so feel free to let your imagination wander (ex. The Science of Running, The Science of Saliva, The Science of Hair Dye, The Science of "Little Tree" Air Fresheners).

Instructions - Day 1

Step 1: Brainstorming
  • Brainstorm possible ...'s. You will need to choose one today, but if you decide to change it later on you may do so, BUT you will have to go back and redo any sections you have completed so they match your new ...
    • Look through past projects by clicking on this link: http://www.chemistryislife.com/-themes
    • Securing your theme (follow these instructions to make sure you are the first to chose your theme)
      • Click here to open a spreadsheet
        • Add your class period, name, and chosen theme
        • You may not change/erase other people's themes and you may NOT choose the same theme as another person. First come, first serve!
Step 2: Starting your rough draft
  • You will be creating an online document to store your research.  This will allow you to continue your research from anywhere in the school, or from home.
  •  Go to www.google.com.  In the top right hand corner hit the "Sign In" button.  If you have a google account you can sign in using your username and password, if you do not have a google account you will need to create an account.  (All you need is your name, and birthdate).
  •  Once you have logged in to your google account find the small grid icon in the top right hand corner of the page.  Select it and find the icon that says "Drive".  Select this icon.
  •  Google Drive allows you to create, share, and publish documents online.  Select the "Create" icon on the left hand side on the screen and select "Document" from the drop down menu.  This will open up a new window where you will type and save your document.
  •  Title your document by changing the title at the top of the page from "Untitled Document" to something related to "The Science of ...".  As you type your project from what you research online it will automatically save!!!! NEAT!
  •  Select share at the top right hand corner of the screen.  In the box that says "Invite People" copy and paste my email address:  hkil2e2n@gmail.com  This will allow me to see how your work is going and to help you out no matter where you are working from.  Make sure you do this step otherwise you will not receive a grade.

-Step 3: Researching your ...
**DO NOT COPY/PASTE ANYTHING FROM THE INTERNET! YOU MUST WRITE IT IN YOUR OWN WORDS!**

  • Create a section in your project document titled "Background Research"
    • This is where you will keep all of the resources you use while researching your topic.
    • Copy/paste the url (page address) for every website and webpage you use in your research
      • Include a DETAILED description of all important information you found at that website below the url. (make bulleted lists)
    • You will continue to add resources to this section throughout the entire project.
    • Keep detailed records of all your resources and the information you get from each because you will need these later when you create your final report in your Bibliography section**
      • Minimum requirement - 4 different, reputable resources
        • Cannot list Google as a source; Wikipedia is OK in most cases.
